The UK has no shortage of great music bands. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Stones were all superb. Yeah, they’re all rock bands in one form or another. One often over looked genre, at least by middle aged males, is adult contemporary or pop. I tend to find value in this music as it tends to offer the listener more substance and meaning. My favorite pop artist from the Eighties is definitely the unassuming, bald, and minuscule drummer-turned-vocalist, Phil Collins.
Collins began his long and distinguished career as the drummer for the band Genesis. In 1981, he decided to give his solo act a try. It was enormously successful and he rolled out 13 straight top ten hits from 1984-1990. With songs such as Sussudio, Easy Lover, and Another Day in Paradise, Phil dominated the already crowded pop genre throughout the 80’s.
For me personally, it was Against All Odds, and In the Air Tonight that really fascinated me. The former just has all the right lyrics that really speak to anyone who has been in love. While, the latter hits you right in the chest especially about half way through when Collins exhibits a drum solo for the ages. As my friend Chris would say, “It’s a great song to roll to.”
